Eyebeam identified early on the importance of addressing the role of technology in the arts and society at large. Our flagship program, residency and fellowships, are now hybrid and designed to provide socially concerned artists who work with tech anywhere in the world with exceptional freedom to explore and create in an atmosphere of risk taking and experimentation. Our artist engagement programs often serve as a critical catalyst for artists, and artists become members of an expansive, active community of alumni worldwide.

The collective’s logo design of the word Begoo* in black is repeated three times, each paired with one word from the “Woman Life Freedom” slogan against a solid saturated orange background. The words Woman, Life, and Freedom, stylized and incorporated into the design of the logo, are meant to resemble long hair in the wind as well as flame tongues –a reference to Iranian women setting their scarves on fire. The text reads: بگو زن بگو زندگی بگو آزادی Begoo Zan, Begoo Zendegi, Begoo Azadi Translation: Say Woman, Say Life, Say Freedom *Begoo means “Speak Up” or “Say it”, often used in the protest chants in Iran in conjunction with the chant “freedom freedom freedom”.

The Democracy Machine

The Democracy Machine is our radical experiment created to unlock artist-led invention in the areas of self-governance, technology, and democracy. The fellowship takes place against an ongoing transformation at Eyebeam and builds on Rapid Response for a Better Digital Future, a fast moving initiative created early in the pandemic so that artists could come together and explore the dark frontier of power that commodifies personal information at the expense of democracy and freedom.

Rapid Response

Created out of an overwhelming desire to lift the voices of artists in a time of crisis and systemic collapse, the initiative arose quickly from conversations at the outbreak of the global pandemic, when Eyebeam paused its highly distinguished flagship residency for the first time in its history and closed its physical space in order to support New York City’s effort to contain Covid-19.

The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism (ECFJ) is an experimental grant-making program that supports artists and artist-journalist teams producing innovative and revelatory journalistic work for major media outlets.

Digital Day Camp

Established in 1998, Digital Day Camp (DDC) is Eyebeam’s longest running program. DDC is an intensive, multi-week, youth arts and technology program for NYC high school students. Through local partnerships, we recruit applicants from youth in schools underrepresented in STEAM programs to ensure a diverse range of ideas and backgrounds in each cohort. During DDC, students work alongside artist-educators and staff, engaging in lectures and hands-on workshops focusing on art and technology tools, careers in the field, and relevant social and artistic topics. We challenge youth and teachers to apply creative thinking strategies to help them develop critical, empowering and long-lasting relationships with technology.
