On Wednesday, March 21, from 5:30PM - 7:30PM, Eyebeam will be holding an opening reception for Brother Islands.

Brother Islands is a reworking of a performance piece that premiered at Eyebeam's MIXER series in 2007 to a sold out audience. This new work is an experimental documentary in the form of a looping video painting. It will be on display in the Eyebeam Window Gallery from March 20th-April 28th. Close inspection of the abstract, layered video imagery reveals glimpses of a long abandoned island quarantine. QR codes frame the video and link to a first-person account of island life in today's homeless shelters. This work is a collaboration between Eyebeam alum Benton-C Bainbridge, who produced and conceptualized the video, with fabrication assistance from Minou Maguna and original text by Bill Etra.

What constitutes the "urban" today? How can it be described? How does a situation matter? What action does it call for? How are its priorities revealed? Eyebeam Honorary Resident Jordan Crandall and Eyebeam Fellow Mark Shepard will conduct an informal public conversation on the articulation of a new urban ontology for contemporary cities.

Honorary Resident Jordan Crandall is an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at University of California San Diego and 2011 winner of the Vilem Flusser Theory Award. Fellow Mark Shepard coordinates the MArch+MFA dual degree program at University of Buffalo and recently edited Sentient City, published by MIT Press/Architectural League of New York.

Jordan Crandall's Unmanned is a piece of "philosophical theater" that explores the changing nature of masculinity in the face of automated technologies of war. Jordan conducts a series of monologues in the guise of seven different characters, supplemented with stage action, video, and sound. Each character is an archetype of masculine identity struggling with its own agency and role in the field of deployment -- historically, the most complex issue in the field of military endeavor.
