The Frontier Prime spacesuit is the first complete pressure garment ever produced at Eyebeam. It features a unique heat sealed bladder and easy to use nylon restraint system. Overall weight is just 13 pounds without life support systems, and it is designed to be adjustable to fit an overall 95 percentile human. The Frontier Prime also features a high canopy visor with a large range of visibility. The right hand glove is provided by Nikolay Moiseev, and features soft fingertips and a preliminary metacarpal joint. The left hand glove is provided by Ted Southern, and is an ultra-low torque single layered glove.

Spacesuit Testing

Here is a quick shot of my "3.3" glove, which I finished last week. I am very excited about the material I have been working with, a fabric that is factory coated with heat-sealable urethane. The glove performs amazingly, and there are only a couple of patterning issues I will be dealing with in the next couple weeks (note the thumb distal metacarpal joint). This shot shows the glove inflated to about 5 psi, just above NASA's spacesuit operating pressure.

Eyebeam - Start!

So here's my first entry to the Spacesuit Gloves blog. I won second place in NASA's Astronaut Glove Challenge in November 2009, and am starting a residency here at Eyebeam to digitize, refine and perfect the flat patterning of the gloves, and experiment with new materials using the laser cutter. I also hope to develop wrist bearings (for easy pronation/supination) and disconnects using the 3D printer, and to move past gloves to develop the basics of a full body, safe, low weight hermetic suit. I'm very excited to be moving my vacuum chamber glove box to Eyebeam tomorrow- I have been customizing and repairing the unit for the last month, and it finally holds a full vacuum! I have several gloves to experiment with to start out, and am working on my next iteration right now.

Spacesuit Gloves

The Spacesuit Gloves project is an attempt to digitally refine and experiment with flat patterns for pressure tight gloves. The vacuum of space and micro-atmospheres of nearby planets require a safe, lightweight and highly functional pressure tight spacesuit for human exploration. With gloves as a starting point for the development of a hermetic full body suit, Ted Southern is digitally developing sophisticated flat patterns which, when inflated, allow a full and easy range of motion for the human body in all its variability. Outer layers for thermal and ballistics protection will also be refined using Eyebeam's facilities. Pressure tight gloves will be on display interactively, in a vacuum chamber glove box at Eyebeam, and positively inflated for demonstration and test purposes.
