Governors Island Sustainable Bicycle

In December 2007, the design team led by West 8 and Rogers Marvel Architects was chosen as the winning team of the international design competition for Governors Island. In this design, the island, once languishing in relative isolation, will become an exploration in re-imagining public space. A combination of natural and created landscapes will conjure fantasies of a lost utopia—of nature, the primordial, and of artificial worlds—creating an unimaginably diverse visual experience along the Hudson shoreline.

Five key destinations will allow for a wealth and variety of spaces and activities; visitors will wander the boardwalks, promenades, and sinuous paths and use the free wooden bikes—on display in Feedback—to discover unforgettable views of the Statue of Liberty and to explore the island’s many introduced biotypes.
