Alexander Chen (b. 1981) creates musical and interactive work. In 2002, he made Sonata for the Unaware, a piece which generated music from video footage of Philadelphia subway commuters. In 2011, he launched http://www.mta.me, which turned the New York subway system into a string instrument. After working with various companies such as The Barbarian Group, he joined Google Creative Lab in 2010, where he conceived the Les Paul Google doodle. As a musician, he is a multi-instrumentalist who performs live on viola under musical monikers The Consulate General and Boy in Static. Chen is currently living in Brooklyn.
