The conversation on sound in physical (and conceptual) space is part of Eyebeam’s Annual Showcase and will be held before the performances between Brian House, Daniel Neumann and Roddy Schrock.

Hell Hoarse (Chuck Bettis, Brendan Murray)
Hell Hoarse is interested in dismantling the notions of slowly evolving electronics to propel the listener in a mental space that is devoid of western timeframes. Tonight they will debut their approach to the quad speaker set up with the intention of transporting the listener into a lucid mainframe to awaken those who are asleep.
Chuck Bettis is a sound scientist and audio activist who utilizes both electronics and voice in his sonic protest research. Bettis was raised in the fertile HarDCore soil, nourished within Baltimore’s enigmatic avant garde gatherings, and currently blossoming in New York’s downtown musical tribe. He has performed with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Jamie Saft, and Afrirampo to name a few. Some of the musicians Bettis has recorded and played live with are as follows; Ikue Mori, Nautical Almanac, Audrey Chen, Yellow Swans, Toshio Kajiwara, Mick Barr, etc, plus a long history of punk bands he was in (most notably the experimental punk band Meta-matics as well as the enigmatic All Scars). Currently he is working on many of his experimental projects such as Brown Wing Overdrive (amorphous group with Derek Morton), Mudang Rouge (quartet with Jerry Lim, Evan Rapport, Josh Blair), Period (quartet with Mike Pride, Charlie Looker, Darius Jones), Hell Hoarse (duo with Brendan Murray), Pretty Clicks (duo with Berangere Maximin) and Chatterblip (duo with Dafna Naphtali), in addition to improvising, recording, or composing with an array of musicians from around the world.
Brendan Murray is a composer/performer from Cambridge, MA. Active since 1999, he is interested in repetitive structure, computer music, electronic processing instruments and intuitive composition. Current activities include the band TAPS with drummer Chris Strunk, improvising with Chuck Bettis in Hell Hoarse and composing new music for electronics and instruments, most recently for the Callithumpian Consort at New England Conservatory.
Colombian born artist Juan Betancurth currently lives and works in Brooklyn NY. Betancurth’s mixed media works use themes from his own experiences to depict scenes, be it literal of figurative, that have been of significance in his life. Family dynamics, Catholicism, Santeria and Witchcraft are among the most common threads in his work. These subjects come together as symbols used to create a visually striking personal mythology that is dark, tender and satirical.
His more recent work has begun to take the vocabulary developed through his previous explorations, and recreate some of the physical and psychological spaces from his childhood. These works, not only immerse the viewer into his world, but at times become performative reenactments merging his past and present.
